IRCC update — what to know if you’re thinking about Canada
Canada has recently held Express Entry draws that place a stronger focus on French-language proficiency. In these targeted draws, some candidates with strong French received Invitations to Apply at lower CRS scores than we’ve seen in many general draws over the past few years.
This may be especially relevant for people from Francophone or partially Francophone countries, including (but not limited to):
North Africa: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya
West & Central Africa: Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Chad
Middle East & Europe: Lebanon, France, Belgium, Switzerland
Caribbean: Haiti
This does not mean everyone from these countries will qualify, but for individuals with strong French-language proficiency, this is a development worth paying attention to.
This does not mean:
French speakers are guaranteed permanent residence
Everyone with French will qualify
This replaces other immigration pathways
Express Entry is still a points-based system, and outcomes depend on individual profiles (age, education, work experience, language, and more).
What this update does suggest is that language skills — particularly French — are playing a more visible role in how Canada is selecting candidates in certain rounds.
If you’re considering Canada, this is something to be aware of as you think about timing, preparation, and longer-term planning.
We’ll share a clearer breakdown tomorrow on what this change may mean — and who it may be most relevant for.
